BLACK OPAL – the new “it” stone

Fine opals have traditionally been reserved for use in haute jewelry due to their rarity and breath-taking display of color.

The Victorians used them and later, Art Nouveau jewelers i.e. René Lalique and George Fouquet, fully embraced them and created their masterpieces around them.

Recently, opals are enjoying a resurgence in popularity with luxury brands like Tiffany & Co. and Cartier jumping on board and creating new one-of-a-kind masterpieces utilizing this most sumptuous material.

I’m loving all of it because a truly magnificent opal has always been one of my personal favorites.

Perhaps the love affair started when my parents went on holiday to Australia when I was 9 years old and brought back a small opal and gold necklace as a “truce” for leaving me behind.

This is why I’m so happy to see new designers like Solange Azagury-Partridge reinterpreting them with a fresh new perspective mixing them with colored pavé diamonds in the most surprising color combo’s in her new collection.

If you don’t know or need a refresher on doublets, read this entry posted last year about opal doublets.
